On late Wednesday evening Everton FC reached the quarterfinals of the Carling Cup. In a heavily fought match against Luton FC, the Blues needed an extra-time to score the winning goal. Luton, which is playing two leagues below Everton, is known as a very strong home team – and the team around Stefan Wessels noticed it quite soon.

Wessels back on bench – 0-2 victory
After his injury, Tim Howard is back tin the Everton goal – and so Stefan Wessels has to sit on bench after four strong appearances.
On Sunday Everton showed a strong defence, after the first clean sheet of the season in the middle-week clash against Sheffield Wednesday.
Lescott and Pienaar scored the two goals at the 0-2-winning against Middlesbrough. So Everton goes up to rank five – at least temporary.
„We all are happy to have won two matches with a clean sheet before the important UEFA-Cup match. We are quite confident to reach the next round at European level on Thursday“, says Stefan Wessels, who got head injury at the beginning of the Shefflied match. „Yes, of course, I felt pain during the match. But it didn’t affect me, so I could go on playing for the whole 90 minutes. It was stitched and I could train next day. It’s not that bad!“
Stefan took his slight back on bench with composure: „Of course I would be glad to be first choice. But when I arrived at Everton FC, I knew that Tim is our first-choice-keeper. He did a good job and it would be unfair to put him on the bench after his short injury. The manager put his trust in Tim . Keepers do need that confidence. For me it is important that the manager was satisfied with my performance, very contented, as he told me.“
On Thursday there will be the second leg in the UEFA Cup facing Meatlist Kharkiv. The first match ended with a 1-1 draw, so a victory or a draw with more than one goal per team is necessary to reach the next round.
In the Carling Cup, Everton will have to play on October, 29th against Luton Town in the fourth round to go to the quarter-finals. Luton Town went down to the League One last season.

Everton defeated by Aston Villa
Last Sunday Everton FC challenged Aston Villa in the Premier League. It was Stefan’s third clash for the Blues after his UEFA-Cup debut last week against Metalist Kharkiv, which en-ded in a draw.

After three weeks England
Three weeks ago Stefan Wessels signed a contract at Everton FC and took part in his first training as a Toffee.
While still waiting to play his first duty for the Premiere League squad, Stefan wore the Everton shirt no. 33 at a reserve match last week.
Although the team lost 1:2 against Sunderland, Stefan and the very young squad did a good job.
„Regarding the age of our squad, we did an impressive job. We saw a strong Cole, but he didn’t score for Sunderland, which shows our good defense. We felt a bit pitty about the winning goal for Sunderland, which was a penalty in the 89th minute. But all in all we can be satisfied“, Stefan said later.
In his first match for an English club, Stefan had some good saves, especially two short-distance-shots by Andy Cole:
„I think, I did a good job, the feedback I got was like this. I’m quite pleased.“
The next chance to wear the Everton dress could be very soon: American International and opponent shot-stopper Tim Howard dislocated his finger playing against Brazil and is doubt for Saturday against Manchester United.

I want to say „goodbye“ to you and thank you for the support you have given to me during the last four years.
My farewell may come all of a sudden for some of you, but I think most of you won't be too surprised.
I personally would have preferred a better parting, for example with a promotion or a successful season in the first division. But unfortunately this was not granted to us.
During the last weeks in Cologne there were some incidents which made life not easy for me. So when I got the opportunity to change to an English club, my family and I knew, that I had to take the chance.
That’s why I went to a short trail in Everton two weeks ago, even if some people told me not to do so.
Since I have been a child it has always been my dream to play in the
Premier League one day.
Besides that I’m glad to sign a club which takes part in the UEFA-cup this
year. That made the move even more attractive.
I’m aware that Tim Howard is the number one at the moment and I have to wait and work to get my chance.
I’m looking forward to making my first long-term international experience and will always remember the wonderful time I had in Cologne, even if there were ups and downs in my career.
The way people celebrate football in Cologne is an outstanding phanomenon. And the crowded and sold out stadium - even in the second division – that really is gigantic!

Turbulente Sommerpause
Zwei Spiele zu früh kam für Stefan Wessels die Sommerpause, als er sich im drittletzten Spiel einen Rippenburch zuzog und fortan pausieren musste.
Aber trotz Verletzung und dadurch zunächst reduziertem Trainingsumfang waren die letzten Wochen ereignisreich. Am Montag nach dem letzten Saisonspiel erblickte sein erstes Kind Felix das Licht der Welt. Stefan hatte das Glück, seine Frau bei der Geburt komplett begleiten zu können.
„Eine einzigartige Erfahrung, die Geburt, der erste Kontakt mit dem Kleinen – und auch sonst waren die ersten Wochen sehr spannend. Mittlerweile hat sich das neue Leben sehr gut eingependelt.“
Die Verletzung ist nun vollständig ausgeheilt: „Meiner Rippe geht’s prima, ich trainiere schon lange auf einem für die Sommerpause hohen Niveau und gehe fit in die Saisonvorbereitung.“
Das wird auch nötig sein, denn inzwischen hat der 1. FC Köln einen weiteren Torwart verpflichtet. Der 36-jährige Faryd Mondragon ist ehemaliger kolumbianischer Nationaltorwart und spielte bisher bei Galatasaray Istanbul. Damit rückte der FC und Trainer Daum von der Aussage ab, mit Stefan Wessels als „Nummer 1“ in die Saison zu gehen.
„Eins möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch klar stellen: Ich habe niemals gesagt, dass ich eine Stammplatzgarantie fordere, wenn ich verlängere. Aber natürlich fiel es mir so leichter, beim FC statt bei einem anderen Verein zu unterschreiben, klar. Doch nun werde ich den Kampf annehmen und in der Vorbereitung alles geben. Der Trainer soll es schwer haben, meinen Konkurrenten aufzustellen“, so Stefan Wessels.
Nach gut einer Woche Training in Köln wird der FC nach Bitburg in das erste von zwei Trainingslagern fahren. Vorher stehen noch Tests gegen eine Pulheimer Stadtauswahl und eine Auswahl der Vereine TV Hoffnungsthal/Union Rösrath an.

Charity Aktion „100 Trikots für Elena und Marie“

Unter dem Motto „100 Trikots für Elena und Marie“ werden vom 29. April bis 31. Mai 2007 viele wertvolle Originaltrikots berühmter Fußballgrößen aus dem In- und Ausland versteigert.
Neben Trikots von Ronaldinho wird auch ein Trikot von Stefan Wessels mit Original-Unterschrift versteigert.
Die Versteigerung erfolgt über die Internetplattform www.sport-auktion.de.
Hintergrund der Benefizaktion ist der tragische Tod des ehemaligen Bochumer Kreisligaspielers Martin S., der bei einem schweren Autounfall Ende letzten Jahres ums Leben gekommen ist. Auch seine Frau erlag wenige Tage später ihren schweren Verletzungen. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebten die beiden Töchter Elena (6) und Marie (2) das Unglück nahezu unverletzt. Die beiden Mädchen leben inzwischen in einer Pflegefamilie.
Um die Zukunft der beiden jungen Vollwaisen zu sichern, haben die Freunde der Verstorbenen die Aktion „100 Trikots für Elena und Marie“ ins Leben gerufen. Der ehemalige isländische Nationalspieler in Diensten des VfL Bochum, Thordur Gudjonsson, hat spontan die Patenschaft übernommen und unterstützt die Aktion maßgeblich. Darüber hinaus wird am Sonntag, 10. Juni, auf dem Platz des LFC Laer (Havkenscheider Str.) ein Benefizspiel stattfinden, für das die rewirpower-Traditionself des VfL Bochum bereits zugesagt hat.

Spieltages hat der FC dafür gesorgt, dass der dritte Tabellen- und damit letzter Aufstiegsplatz noch in Reichweite für Fürth und Freiburg, die punktgleich sind, sowie begrenzt auch für den 1. FC Kaiserlautern, der 2 Punkte zurückliegt. Auch der Liga-2., Hansa Rostock, darf sich mit 2 Punkten Vorsprung nicht sicher sein.
Der FC überzeugte gegen den MSV mit einer guten Leistung, die Tore für den FC beim 1:3 schossen zweimal Novakovic und Helmes. Das zwischenzeitliche 1:1 schoss Grlic durch ein Freistoßtor.
Stefan Wessels, der am Gegentor schuldlos war und in einigen Szenen vom Duisburger Sturm gefordert wurde, beendete das Spiel zwar, wird allerdings die letzten beiden Spiele der Saison wohl nur von der Tribüne verfolgen können:

Wessels verlängert 2 Jahre
Der 1. FC Köln und Stefan Wessels werden ihre Zusammenarbeit weitere 2 Jahre fortsetzen. Einen neuen Arbeitsvertrag unterschrieben Michael Meier und Stefan Wessels.
"Wir waren schon länger einig, hatten aber keine Eile mit der Unterschrift. Dies haben wir nun erledigt. Der FC hatte für mich immer Priorität und war erster Ansprechpartner, andere Anfragen kamen für mich im Prinzip nicht in Frage. Der FC plant mit mir, der Trainer ebenfalls, der FC ist mir ans Herz gewachsen. Da ist die Fortsetzung nur logisch. Ich will hoffen, dass die nächsten beiden Jahre erfolgreicher werden als die vergangenen 4 Jahre insgesamt waren. Ein Aufstieg und ein Klassenerhalt sind in dieser Reihenfolge die klaren Ziele."
Der 1. FC Köln und Stefan Wessels werden ihre Zusammenarbeit weitere 2 Jahre fortsetzen. Einen neuen Arbeitsvertrag unterschrieben Michael Meier und Stefan Wessels.
"Wir waren schon länger einig, hatten aber keine Eile mit der Unterschrift. Dies haben wir nun erledigt. Der FC hatte für mich immer Priorität und war erster Ansprechpartner, andere Anfragen kamen für mich im Prinzip nicht in Frage. Der FC plant mit mir, der Trainer ebenfalls, der FC ist mir ans Herz gewachsen. Da ist die Fortsetzung nur logisch. Ich will hoffen, dass die nächsten beiden Jahre erfolgreicher werden als die vergangenen 4 Jahre insgesamt waren. Ein Aufstieg und ein Klassenerhalt sind in dieser Reihenfolge die klaren Ziele."
